The word ‘liturgy’ has Greek roots: Leitourgia meaning public service or public worship.

• In a religious sense, it refers to an ‘order’, a way or a pattern of public worship, whose purpose is a communal response to and participation in a sacred activity reflecting praise, thanksgiving, intercession or repentance.

• This pattern or way of worship is used by a Christian congregation or denomination on a regular basis. The Eucharist or Mass is an example of Liturgy. There is a certain order or structure to the Mass: Introductory Rites, Prayers, Readings, gestures, etc.

• The significance of the Liturgy is to reflect praise, thanksgiving, intercession or repentance.
